The PEAR Installer Manifesto

Someone sent me a link to a new book on the PEAR Installer. I probably would have just glossed over it had the sender not insisted that I look, because the book talked about how to do lots of non-PEAR stuff like deployment and upgrade management.

That did pique my interest and I just ordered a copy. How to deploy code to production servers, keep things up to date, etc. is something that’s been coming up more and more in my projects. We’ve been doing things like using SVN to do this, but that’s not always available. However, since we use PEAR for lots of functionality, PEAR needs to be present on any server we’re deploying our PHP code to, making this a very interesting concept, indeed.

I’ll let you know how the book is when I get it.
